Notice Board

Dear all;

Cc: IBW / Legal Officers - Diocesan Office

This is being addressed to all those members of our Parish who I am personally aware have already been sworn-in as Attorneys-at-Law OR younger members pursuing a course of education leading to the grant of same..

Please feel free to pass/forward this along to any others of the above category you may be in contact with. I can think of a few (whose emails I dont have), young Dhanya Goonewardene, Nihathmani (akki) Perera, Harin Gomes, Lakshan Dias, Murdhu (akki) Fernando.

Background:

I have discussed this matter with the Incumbent & Board of Wardens (under Cc above) at our last meeting, and therefore comes with their endorsement as well.

Understandably all of us have multiple duties and committments which require our valuable time, nevertheless I'm confident that all of you agree with me that we need to "give something back" to this Parish that has blessed us with much, and sent us out to the world.

Since assuming duties in January this year, I have noted and categorised several long-outstanding matters, some stretching as far back as 1979 in connection with litigation and/or property disputes in our Parish. I certainly am not surprised that no single person could physically attend and effectively conclude all such matters and that they were left "outstanding" over several tenures in office; for such a mammoth task is practically impossible for any single person,  leave alone a team. Certainly even if I were to attempt to resolve them alone, I'm certain I'll end up with the same result!

The Proposal:

This is where I thought perhaps all of us could pool our resources, and see whether we cannot get out Parish out of as many of these unresolved issues as possible, at least during our lifetime; and not leave it for another generation to handle.

Therefore the idea is to form a Committee of Lawyers/Law Students to be in place as a "Standing Committee", convened by the Warden (as per the Trust Deed) of any particular year, to sit regularly, discuss and monitor these issues in an attempt to resolve them over an identifiable period; hopefully with short - medium term targets.

There are 2 intended objectives in this mission:

1. We FINALLY get to go into detail of ALL our long-unresolved issues, not just one person "glossing over" the matter during their particular tenure in office, pooling our time and strength together, and see how best we can settle or at least manage those issues;

2. We get to groom our younger generation of HEC parishioners and keep them abreast of affairs of this Parish and how we manage them, thus preparing them for the tasks that will lie ahead of them as and when they assume more responsible office, hopefully at a not too distant future date.

As such, please let me know whether you are free to meet at the Parish Hall around 5.30 /6 pm tomorrow for a preliminary discussion on how we may proceed in this connection.

It may be of interest for you to note that we're due to meet a similar Committee of Professional Accountants tomorrow at 7pm, more or less along the same lines, to manage the finances of the Parish and there has been a very positive response from almost ALL the Accountants that we invited.

I look forward to your positive response in keen anticipation.

In Christ,

CW
